This service order provides a menu of ideas to create a themed service, or to slot into an existing pattern of service. It is designed to be used with the accompanying documents “Home – Hymns and songs”, and “Home – Sermon”.
The following sermon is based on Jeremiah 29:4–11 and addresses our culture’s rootlessness, linked to the desire to continually look over the horizon for ‘the next move’, for ‘a better place’. It emphasizes the biblical call that most of us need to hear: to stay put and deepen our roots in the places God has put us.
The following prayers can be used in your church service as prayers of confession or intercession, and also in your own home.
The songs below include both modern and traditional hymns that celebrate our embodied calling in God’s world, and the beauty and wonder of creation.
The theme of ‘Home’ lends itself to all sorts of further activities – and most of all to seeking how to engage with your local area to make it a better home for people and wildlife. Below are a variety of ideas and links for further reading and activities. There are also extra resources in ‘Home – Small group material’ and ‘Home – Children’s activities’.
These can be used as a menu of activities to choose from either in a Sunday service when children go into their groups (or even within an all-age service), or for a midweek activity, or as part of a ‘Messy Church’ event on ‘Home’.

Where is your home? The Bible actually says that God’s home will be with humanity, and God calls us to put down roots and bear good fruit in the places where we’ve been planted. This Environment Resource Pack on Home provides resources for churches to celebrate their local area – the human and wildlife communities they share it with – and to seek ways to be involved in caring for their homes.
